Inflation and Rising Living Costs – Supply Chain at Home.

Use supply chain at home to help reduce living costs.  Staggering inflation and rising living costs are causing major difficulties for many people.  Thought it would be good to ask the supply chain community on ways people could reduce their living costs.  We are going to continue to add ideas on this page as we get feedback from the community.  We are going to post this in our social media groups and ask for suggestions.

  • Gas prices are high so shop around.  In the area I live in prices can differ by 30 cents within a few miles.  Seems the closer to the freeway the more expensive gas becomes.  There is one specific gas station brand that is always higher than everyone else so I stay away from them.  I saw this comment about traveling to Yellowstone National Park and this is why I wrote this: “Gas in Coram was $1.50 cheaper than West Glacier last week. Same for going to Browning rather than St. Mary.”
  • Will start with suppliers of food, yes grocery shopping. Do you shop at a place that is known for having the lowest prices in your area.  If you shop at different grocery stores compare prices.  If one store is always cheaper than another that should be part of your decision.  But also look at the total cost of ownership. An example being how far do you have to drive to a grocery store with lower prices?  If two grocery stores are the same distance it is an easy decision to go to the store with lower prices.  But if you are going to the grocery store to pick up milk, and the cheaper store will cost an extra $2.00 in gas, the total cost of ownership for the milk is from the more expensive store.  There can be big differences in prices of everyday items at grocery stores. If you buy in bulk are you eating it all or throwing some of it away? If you are buying in bulk to save money but throwing some of it away are you really saving money?  To be honest this is all common sense if you break it down into small segments.  When Sam Walton (founder of Walmart) was first opening his stores the term supply chain didn’t exist.  Sam Walton did what made sense to lower prices.  Hopefully we will get lots of ideas on ways people can lower their cost of living.
  • Reduce finished inventory in the refrigerator.  If you are going to make extra food for left overs be sure it is eaten.  If you have left overs in the refrigerator and you throw it away similar to having finished goods inventory then having to get rid of it because it is expired or outdated.
  • How might people deal with rising rents?
  • How could people save with vehicle costs?
  • We will continue to add ideas to reduce living costs.  What ideas do you have?

We found some past posts on SupplyChainToday that could be very helpful to reduce living costs.  Using Kaizen (continuous improvement) to save money at home.

These quotes on inflation and recession may raise some eyebrows.
