Artificial Intelligence 101 Discussion #1.

This is our very first Artificial Intelligence 101 discussion. As “101” suggest these will be basic discussions and are geared towards non-programmers.  If you are on Facebook you can partipate in the discussion below by adding comments.  Thought this would be a good way to expand on various quotes about artificial intelligence.  Quotes are a great way to get a lot of information very quickly.  Some people may not be well versed in artificial intelligence so going to expand on the quotes.

“A baby learns to crawl, walk and then run.  We are in the crawling stage when it comes to applying machine learning.” ~Dave Waters

This quote is to help understand where we are with applying machine learning.  To take a step back, machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence.  If it will help you better understand you can replace machine learning with artificial intelligence in the quote.  As the quote says, we are in the crawling phase of applying maching learning (artificial intelligence).  This quote is valuable because we can easily connect with it.  We have all gone from babies to adults.  My grandfather was in a wheel chair but people can still understand the analogy by thinking of how a baby learns.  We start with addition, then subtractions, multiplication and so on.  Thing about your knowledge when you were in elementary school and compare it where you are now.  The jump is significant.

Where Artificial Intelligence is Headed

There are all kinds of predictions of where we will be in the upcoming years with artificial intelligence.  Some of the predictions are very beneficial for the human race, and other predictions are detrimental.  The following quote by Ray Kurzweil shows how quickly artificial intelligence will reach human levels.  “Artificial intelligence will reach human levels by around 2029. Follow that out further to, say, 2045, we will have multiplied the intelligence, the human biological machine intelligence of our civilization a billion-fold.” Although we are currently in the crawling stage, based on this quote above, it won’t take artificial intelligence long to be “walking”.  Matter of fact, artificial intelligence is already able to teach itself to walk.  Here is Google DeepMind AI teaching itself to walk.

The main thing to get from this discussion is that artificial intelligence is changing the world we live in.  The Internet changed the world greatly, artificial intelligence is going to make the Internet pale in comparison.  Just like the Internet brought new jobs that didn’t exist previously, artificial intelligence will do the same.  Many of us will be doing jobs in 5 years that don’t even exist today.  It is extremely important to keep your skills updated.  It is predicted that artificial intelligence will be taking many jobs in the future.  Keep up to date on what jobs artificial intelligence will most likely be taking in the near future.

Self-Driving Vehicles

Self-driving vehicles are getting better everyday.  We are going from the crawling stage to the walking stage.  People are predicting in the next year or two we will have fully self-driving cars on the road.  If you are in the transportation field be ready to self-driving vehicles to fully disrupt the industry.  The pandemic created a shortage of truck drivers because of the significant increase in demand for goods.  Imagine self-driving trucks that don’t need breaks, don’t get sick, and won’t complain.  They can basically go 24/7.  Whether people agree with this or not, it is coming.

The “Running” Stage

We aren’t going to get into the “Running” stage because this is full of speculation.  There are a great deal of extremely smart people who believe regulation would be the right thing to do for artificial intelligence.  Once artificial intelligence is able to create artificial intelligence, what will it create?  There are other very smart people who do not believe we have anything to worry about.  This discussion on possible dangers of AI could last for hours and I am sure people have written long papers on this topic.  Will leave you with this quote that we will discuss in a future Artifical Intelligence 101 discussion: “If Elon Musk is wrong about artificial intelligence and we regulate it who cares.  If he is right about AI and we don’t regulate it we will all care.” ~Dave Waters
